Benefits of Buying Remanufactured Parts for Compact Equipment

Photo of several remanufactured parts.

Time to replace essential compact equipment components, such as engines and hydraulic parts? Rather than buying new or used, consider remanufactured parts.

Many compact equipment manufacturers offer a remanufactured parts program, which consists of taking worn components, also known as “core,” and returning them to like-new condition. Reman parts have the same performance and reliable service life as new parts but come with a substantial cost savings. Remanufactured parts are available for a variety of compact equipment, including compact track loaders, compact excavators and skid-steer loaders.

How does the process work?

When a component is at the end of its useful life, you have the option of handing it off for remanufacturing rather than tossing it in the trash. If you’re interested, you can start the process by reaching out to your local equipment dealer for a quote based on your specific component requirements. Your dealer may even be able to direct you to an online parts catalog that lists parts currently available for remanufacture.

After you and your dealer agree upon a quote, the dealership will usually require a deposit and occasionally a fee (called a “core charge”) for the part as well. The core charge is refunded when you hand off the part to your dealer. The component is then sent to a remanufacturing factory for an inspection to determine if its parts are salvageable. Unlike rebuilt components, remanufactured parts are completely disassembled, cleaned using environmentally-friendly processes, and inspected before passing through a production line that checks, refurbishes and replaces the parts, if necessary.

The parts are then tested to ensure they meet or exceed exact original equipment manufacturer (OEM) specifications for a like-new quality. If a component has a failure, the part will go back through the line until it passes inspection. Once the component meets quality inspections, it is then painted and readied for sale as a remanufactured product. Generally, components can be remanufactured multiple times if they meet certain specifications.

How much does it cost?

The cost of reman parts for compact equipment can vary based on how much remanufacturing needs to be completed. On average, reman parts cost 25 to 50 percent less than new and come with a one-year warranty that can help protect the overall value of your machine. Many manufacturers offer a same-as-new parts warranty, so ask your dealership about what options are available.

As with any piece of equipment, your machine and its parts need to be reliable. With reman, you can lower your overall cost of ownership and reduce the time it takes to remove, rebuild and reinstall major components. These advantages all help you maintain a competitive edge and continue to keep your business productive year-round.

What are the environmental benefits?

Using remanufactured parts offers significant energy savings and environmental benefits. In fact, reman requires approximately 85 percent less energy than the mining, remining, melting and machining needed for new parts. Using reman engines and components helps reduce landfill waste and can have a significant impact on greenhouse gas reduction efforts.

Are there additional maintenance considerations?

Reman parts do not have any additional maintenance requirements, other than general maintenance performed by you or your dealership. By partnering with your dealership, you’ll be able to tap into the knowledge of trained technicians with access to the latest information, resources and tools. They know what to look for to help minimize downtime and can check your machine’s diagnostics with tools and software not typically available to customers. Technicians also have the proper training on the latest emission standards.

Remanufacturing is a growing industry and continues to do well in today’s financial atmosphere. In fact, for some business owners, repairing equipment with reman parts makes financial and economic sense. Like-new performance, reliable service life and substantial cost savings are just a few reasons why reman parts can help you to get the most out of your equipment investment.
